Marvel star Jeremy Renner said the Avengers will lose in Doomsday, and it's "their fault" because they didn't give Hawkeye a call.
The original Avengers star confirmed he wouldn't help fight against Doctor Doom's quest to conquer the multiverse during what appears to be a Q&A segment from last month. In a highlight from the interview, captured and shared on X/Twitter by user @drdoomarchive, Renner confirmed that he's "not in" Avengers: Doomsday when it premieres this December.
That might come as a disappointment for fans of his bow-and-arrow hero, especially considering some of his previous teases suggested he may show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe again. Alas, it seems his long-awaited return as Hawkeye remains on pause. He doesn't seem too bitter about his absence, but that doesn't mean he isn't willing to take a few jabs at the team.
"Doomsday, I'm not in," Renner said. "So, the Avengers will probably lose, just so you know."
He added with a laugh, "They didn't call me, so it's their fault they're gonna lose."
Despite lacking Hulk's superpowered strength or the ability to alter reality like Scarlet Witch, Renner's take on Clint Barton has remained a fan-favorite amongst MCU fans since he first appeared as the character in 2011's Thor. He eventually went on to graduate from that cameo role to be a leading hero in projects like the original Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Captain America: Civil War, and he eventually led as the main character in Disney+'s 2021 series Hawkeye, too. That said, he's not always shown up for every fight against evil.
Renner infamously sat out 2018's Avengers: Infinity War, which saw its gaggle of heroes and stars truly lose their first fight when Thanos snapped half of the universe into dust. The running joke is, well, if Hawkeye had been around to help, Thanos wouldn't have been so lucky. Now that the character seems to be left out again for Doomsday, Renner can't help but see what's coming.
Of course, he did show up to help finish the fight for the Infinity Stones in Avengers: Endgame, which, coincidentally, saw the heroes win the day (for the most part). Marvel invited fans to revisit that saga-ending story with its Encore re-release last month. Renner said he was excited to see it in theaters at the time.
"They're releasing the Encore of Endgame, I think next week or something, right?" he said. "I'm actually excited to see that. I'm going to take my daughter to see it. She was a little young when it came out prior, so I'm excited that's coming out."
With Renner set to sit out Avengers: Doomsday when it premieres December 18, 2026, we'll have to see if he slips back into his superhero suit for 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars. His future as the character largely remains unclear, though comments he made in 2025 suggested he would be open to returning for Hawkeye Season 2. Any more from that show, which also starred Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop, seems to be on the back burner for now, though.
